The Republicans in the Senate, as a whole, did what was best for the nation. They voted to start Obamacare repeal talks. However, there were two notable traitors who stuck with their Democratic best friends and went against the will of the people.
If it weren’t for Vice President Mike Pence casting yet another tie breaking vote, the ruckus would have been even worse. Senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski have been with the Democrats in keeping us saddled with the Obamacare disaster since the beginning.
Collins and Murkowski are in the ranks multiple moderate Senate Republicans worried about logical Medicaid reductions in any Obamacare repeal and replace.
In separate statements last week, both women were against the attempt by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., to pass legislation repealing Obamacare without new legislation in place.
Republican Sens. Shelley Moore Capito (W.Va.) and Susan Collins (Maine) said that they will not support moving forward with the plan to repeal ObamaCare with a delayed replacement.
“My position on this issue is driven by its impact on West Virginians. With that in mind, I cannot vote to repeal ObamaCare without a replacement plan that addresses my concerns and the needs of West Virginians,” Capito said in a statement.
Collins said that she is still a “no” on proceeding to the House-passed bill, which would be used as a vehicle for any Senate action.
“We can’t just hope that we will pass a replacement within the next two years. Repealing without a replacement would create great uncertainty for individuals who rely on the [Affordable Care Act] and cause further turmoil in the insurance markets,” she said.
She added that she’s recommended Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), the chairman of the Senate’s Heath, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, “begin to hold hearings to examine ways to fix the many flaws in the ACA so that it will work better for all Americans.”
As for potential political consequences of their votes, Murkowski will not be up for re-election until 2022. Collins’ turn will come in 2020, though she has not ruled out stepping down to run for governor of Maine next year.
Leave it to loser RINOs to try and ruin our agenda. The agenda that the American people voted for.
