President Donald Trump has signed the groundbreaking FIRST STEP Act into law, and the black community is elated.
At the signing ceremony, former Obama aide Van Jones hailed Trump’s success and praised the movement for freedom behind Trump.
“The freedom of the people who are trapped in a broken system, the freedom of people who are trapped in addiction, the freedom of people who are trapped in poverty, those are the people that your opportunity zones are targeted at, your opioid policies are targeted at, and your criminal justice policy is targeted at,” Jones declared.
“And when you’re trying to help people at the bottom sir, I will work with or against any Democrat, with or against any Republican, because there is nothing more important than freedom.”
Black activist Topeka Sam was similarly joyous.
“When I was in federal prison for three years, there was no hope, there was no program, there was nothing for anyone,” she said.
“We are looking forward to continuing to work with you Mr. President and to make sure that our people will have everything they need when they come home so we can all have an opportunity to transform our lives.”
The reform legislation, which was pushed by Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) and Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), reduces taxpayer spending on incarcerating non-violent offenders, so that law enforcement can focus their efforts on the violent thugs terrorizing both black and white communities. It repeals many of the mandatory minimum sentences that were enacted under the Clinton administration.
By embracing this major reform, Trump has demonstrated he is able to succeed in reforming entrenched systems where Obama badly failed. He has also shown his prowess as a master negotiator, being able to win over both sides of the aisle in order to change the lives of working class Americans of all races affected by unjust Clinton-era policies.
