The latest anti-Trump liberal faux outrage is over the President’s daughter Ivanka being awarded trademarks to her name in China on the same day that she had dinner with the Chinese president. Never mind that she applied for these trademarks months or maybe years before the dinner or that there is absolutely no connection between the two things, liberals hate Trump and they are mad. Easily the stupidest aspect of this is that the left is complaining that Ivanka has a “monopoly” on her own name. Seriously? This is all the “Resistance” can come up with?
The Boston Globe reports:
On April 6, Ivanka Trump’s company won provisional approval from the Chinese government for three new trademarks, giving it monopoly rights to sell Ivanka brand jewelry, bags and spa services in the world’s second-largest economy. That night, the first daughter and her husband, Jared Kushner, sat next to the president of China and his wife for a steak and Dover sole dinner at Mar-a-Lago.
While the lefties at the BG admit that there is no connection between these two things and that Ivanka has done nothing remotely illegal, they still bitch about this:
Trademarks pose ethical, and possibly legal, implications for government employees because they are granted by foreign states and confer the monopoly right to sell branded product in a particular country — an entitlement that can be enormously valuable.
Law Newz has a similar problem with this non-problematic story:
F-DOTUS just got “provisional trademark approval” to sell her jewelry, bags, and spa services in China. And I should really say “sell” with a capital “S,” because those trademarks give Ivanka a full-on monopoly over there.
Understand this: Ivanka Trump doesn’t have a monopoly on jewelry, bags, and spa services in China, she has a monopoly on these things that bear her name, which isn’t a monopoly in any sense of the word.
Another thing that is important here is how shit works in China. If I wanted to start selling Elizabeth Warren branded Indian headdresses I could not because in the US she has a right to her own name. That’s not true in China. Anyone can start selling products bearing other people’s names without permission so long as it isn’t trademarked. That’s why President Trump actually applied for a trademark on Trump-branded escort services, because he doesn’t want unscrupulous Chinese businesses marketing Trumpian prostitutes.
The only thing Ivanka did was protect her own name in China. This isn’t unethical, illegal, or evil; it’s called being smart. I know that doing things that make sense makes no sense to liberals, but they seriously need to find something else to freak out over.
And while they are pointing the accusing finger of monopolies, maybe they should take a look at themselves. They clearly have a monopoly on bullshit and that’s not a fair or ethical business practice. Let somebody else be full of shit for a change.
