Trump Offers a Major Plan to Open Government

by: Daveda Gruber:

On Saturday President Trump, in a televised White House address, spoke to the American people.

Trump offered the Democrats a compromise package on immigration. The effort to end the partial government shutdown was not met well as the Democrats dismissed the olive branch as a “non-starter” before Trump even spoke.

Trump seemed more than fair announcing that he was prepared to back a three-year extension of protections for 700,000 immigrants who came to the country illegally as young children.

These young people were protected from deportation under the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

Trump wants $5.7 billion that he has requested for a barrier on the southern border in exchange.

Trump stated, “Walls are not immoral.”

He added that a wall “will save many lives and stop drugs from pouring into our country.”

Trump’s offer would extend protections for 300,000 recipients of the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program.

Trump said, “Our immigration system should be a source of pride, not a source of shame.”

Trump pushed for politicians to “take off their armor” and find solutions.

Trump plan would include $800 million for drug detection technology to secure ports of entry.

It would also provide for 2,750 new border agents and law enforcement professionals. He said the country would require another 75 new immigration judges to reduce the backlog of asylum requests.

He reiterated that all his measures have been supported by Democrats before.

Much of the address Trump spoke about the dangers that an open border presented. He described a “very wide and open gateway for criminals and gang members to enter the United States.”

He stated that there was a possibility of future, broader immigration reform if his proposals were accepted by Congress.

Trump said, “If we are successful in this effort, we will have the best chance in a long time at bipartisan immigration reform, and it won’t stop here, it will keep going until we do it all.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi spoke out before the president’s announcement and said that the proposal indicated a “compilation of several previously rejected initiatives, each of which is unacceptable and in total, do not represent a good faith effort to restore certainty to people’s lives.”

Pelosi said in a statement, “It is unlikely that any one of these provisions alone would pass the House, and taken together, they are a non-starter. For one thing, this proposal does not include the permanent solution for the Dreamers and TPS recipients that our country needs and supports.”

The partial government shutdown led to 800,000 federal workers not being paid.

Trump has said he will not sign a bill to open the government unless it includes funding for a wall or barrier.

It seems as though Republicans and Democrats are stuck on issues.

which has dragged on for almost a month and led to 800,000 federal workers not being paid, is the result of Republicans and Democrats being unable to come to an agreement over Trump’s demand for wall funding. Trump has said he will not sign a bill to open the government unless it includes that funding, while Democrats have refused to consider the $5.7 figure, offering approximately $1.3 billion for general border security.

Also rejecting the proposal ahead of the announcement was Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill.

Durbin said in a statement, “First, President Trump and Senate Majority Leader [Mitch] McConnell must open the government today. Second, I cannot support the proposed offer as reported and do not believe it can pass the Senate. Third, I am ready to sit down at any time after the government is opened and work to resolve all outstanding issues.”

Pelosi said that Democrats intended to pass six bills next week and other legislation to open the government, “so that we can fully negotiate on border security proposals.”

In her statement Pelosi demanded, “The President must sign these bills to re-open government immediately and stop holding the American people hostage with this senseless shutdown. Each day he prolongs this needless crisis, Coast Guardsmen, FBI agents, border patrol officers, TSA agents, and hundreds of thousands more workers are forced to live without knowing how they can feed their families or pay their bills.”

Well now Ms. Pelosi, if you want them to get paid, why the heck were you planning a trip to Afghanistan with your cohorts in the midst of a shutdown?

The ball is now in the Democrat’s court.

  1. Bottom line; no matter what Trump offers, the dems will say no. They fear and hate him that much. I do not believe Pelosi should be house speaker; she has no intent to work with this president even though he supported her being the speaker due to her tenure. She needs to be removed. So does Chuck Schumer. Neither have any business in government as they have no intent to serve the nation; only their little portion of it. What they want and what will benefit them. Well, that ain’t the job and they ain’t doing the job so they need to go. Nuff said.

    • Very insightful comment. It would be difficult to remove Pelosi and Schumer but they really don’t belong in office if they have intentions of keeping up their agenda to destroy Trump and the American people.
