People come to this country because it is different from the places they left. They seek the opportunities, freedoms, and way of life that set it apart. The notion of fundamentally changing it into a different kind of place raises an obvious question: if America needs to become unrecognizable to satisfy certain visions, why not pursue that vision somewhere else? Somalia, for instance, already exists as the kind of place some seem intent on importing elements of here.
Critics of this mindset often point out that America’s biggest flaw isn’t some inherent defect in its founding. It’s that the country has been far too tolerant and inclusive of voices that openly work to undermine its core identity while enjoying its benefits and holding positions of power. On Independence Day, when millions celebrate what makes this nation exceptional, messages like Omar’s serve as a reminder of the divide. One side wants to keep what works. The other wants something entirely different.
Her comments didn’t land as a unifying patriotic message for most Americans. They landed as confirmation of an agenda focused on transformation rather than stewardship. That’s the part that was never truly quiet to begin with.
